Things to Know from Skiing in Svalbard on a Sailboat

Sail to the foot of a mountain, put on your skis on the beach, climb to the summit with ski touring gear, and ski down the other side to the next beach, where our sailboat will pick you up. This is Ski and Sail SVALBARD.

We traverse the Norwegian Arctic of Svalbard, departing from Longyearbyen northward along the west side of the archipelago. The best of Svalbard lies beyond its most famous fjord, Isfjorden. Once we leave it behind, we enter the pure Arctic, lose mobile signal, and can completely disconnect.

The ascents made during the trips are planned jointly based on the group’s skill level, weather, and general conditions. After the daily ascents, we head to the next fjord and prepare for the following day.

Svalbard is polar bear territory, an animal we want to see but from a distance. A series of protocols must be followed every time we disembark, and our guides are certified and trained to ensure group safety in case of encounters.

The sailboat used is a 23-meter steel vessel, fully equipped to explore the Arctic. It has 6 cabins and 5 full bathrooms with showers and hot water. The interior is very cozy, with a panoramic lounge to relax and enjoy the scenery after a day of skiing.

There will be one mountain guide for every 5 participants, so if the group is large, we can split according to goals and skill level. We have a captain and assistant experienced in Arctic ice navigation responsible for safety and well-being aboard.

All meals during the week are included, and all participants help with cooking duties. The only extra expenses are flights and, if the group chooses to dine out upon arrival at Longyearbyen on the last day. There are daily direct flights to Svalbard from Oslo with Norwegian and SAS.

We have about 3 annual SkiSail Svalbard departures in May. Some last 7 days, others 9. Spots fill quickly, even 8 to 12 months in advance
