Things to Know from Svalbard Ski Expedition

Discover the best ski touring experience in the Atomfjella mountains, the highest peaks of Svalbard. Known for their isolation and couloirs, these mountains are a dream destination for skiers worldwide. Many of these rugged peaks remain unclimbed, offering a unique opportunity for those seeking adventure. Spend an entire week exploring this epic terrain with us!

Experience the true wilderness of Svalbard in Atomfjella, where endless routes await, giving you the chance to leave fresh tracks in untouched snow.

Our journey begins with preparation and packing, followed by an exciting snowmobile transfer covering approximately 165 km across central Spitsbergen. Departing from Longyearbyen, we traverse rugged peaks and vast glaciers in a 5 to 6-hour journey (weather permitting) to reach Atomfjella. Along the way, we will stop to take in the stunning views and stretch our legs.

The snowmobile trip is an adventure in itself, especially if the weather is good. The usual route spans about 100 km across the vast Lomonosovfonna glacier plateau, with elevations ranging from 800 to 1,200 meters, leading us to the Newtontoppen-Atomfjella region. However, adverse weather conditions like heavy snowfall or strong winds can make this journey challenging. Some participants may need to drive snowmobiles, so prior experience or a driving license is recommended.

Our base camp in Atomfjella is located on the Galler glacier at 900 meters altitude, surrounded by rugged peaks and couloirs—a paradise for skiers. The camp includes a heated communal tent for dining and socializing, along with smaller sleeping tents equipped with reindeer skins and sleeping pads. Each night, immerse yourself in the Arctic experience, keeping watch for polar bears under the midnight sun.

After arriving at base camp, the snowmobiles will return to Longyearbyen, and we will spend the next six days exploring the vast and varied terrain of Atomfjella. Each day, ski routes will be selected based on weather, snow quality, and group ability. With mountains ranging from 1,400 to 1,700 meters, significant vertical drops of up to 1,200 meters are expected. Among the many peaks we may climb is the possibility of reaching the summit of Perriertoppen, the highest peak in Atomfjella.

On the last day, we will dismantle the camp and load the sleds before the snowmobiles arrive to transport us back to Longyearbyen, with an estimated arrival time of 8:00 PM.
